When a Drop Becomes a Story — The Spirit of Dalmatia in a Glass

Lozovača grape brandy is more than a drink — it’s a symbol of Dalmatian tradition, family warmth, and stone-born resilience.

There’s a scent that takes you back to childhood.

The sound of a copper still in the yard.

Laughter, heat, stone, vines — and hands that know when it’s done, eyes that recognize the perfect moment.

It’s not just brandy.

It’s Lozovača — the liquid connection between generations, a symbol of home, patience, and the people who learned how to draw life out of stone.

In Dalmatia, they say:

“Without lozovača, there is no home.”

And where the vine meets the stone, in Primošten, OPG Branko Marinov keeps that tradition alive — one that doesn’t measure success in liters, but in love for the land and everything it gives.

Taste our Lozovača — pure, honest, and true to its roots.

What Is Lozovača Brandy?

Lozovača is a grape brandy distilled from fermented grapes or wine, known in English as “grape rakija” or “brandy from the vine.”

It’s one of the oldest spirits of Dalmatia, with roots going back to ancient times.

Although it’s often mistaken for komovica, there’s a key difference:

  • Lozovača is made from ripe, fresh grapes full of sugar.

  • Komovica is made from grape pomace — the leftovers after winemaking.

In other words, Lozovača is the pure essence of the vine — the spirit of grapes that give both wine and brandy.

Every drop carries the taste of sun, soil, and sea breeze — that’s why they call it the spirit of Dalmatia.

A Brief History

The first lozovača was not made in large stills, but in small copper pots over open fire.

Every home had its own story of the “first distillation” — a family secret passed down through generations: when to lift the lid, how to separate the “heart” from the “head” and “tail.”

Those skills were never written — only learned by watching, smelling, and tasting.

In Primošten, among vineyards where Branko Marinov now tends the vines, people still remember when the still was heated by wood, and the scent of brandy filled the narrow stone streets.

Today, the tools are modern, but the soul remains the same — patience, intuition, and respect for nature cannot be replaced.

How Lozovača Is Made – Step by Step

1. Selecting the Grapes

The foundation of every good Lozovača is healthy, ripe grapes.

At OPG Branko Marinov, we use Babić and Maraština, local Dalmatian varieties known for their rich aroma and sugar content.

The grapes are crushed and left to ferment, where natural yeasts convert sugar into alcohol.

2. Fermentation

Depending on temperature and sweetness, fermentation lasts from several days to a few weeks.

Once calm, the mixture is ready for the still.

3. Distillation

The heart of the process.

Copper still, open flame, and time.

The first drops — the “head” — are discarded for their high methanol content.

The “heart” is what makes real Lozovača — clean, fragrant, strong but smooth.

The “tail” is separated to preserve purity.

At OPG Branko Marinov, every batch is distilled by hand — slowly and with care, just as our ancestors did.

4. Aging

Fresh brandy can be sharp, so it’s aged in glass or stainless steel tanks to let the flavors soften and round out.

The result?

Crystal-clear, elegant grape brandy with a true aroma of the Dalmatian vine.

Lozovača and the Dalmatian Table

In Dalmatia, people don’t say “Let’s have a rakija.”

They say:

“Let’s have one.”

Because it’s understood — that one is Lozovača.

It’s enjoyed:

  • Before lunch, as an aperitif

  • During celebrations, as a symbol of joy

  • When a guest arrives, as a gesture of respect

  • Or alone, in silence, when it’s time to reflect.

Lozovača is Dalmatia’s social currency.

Every glass holds a story, a memory, a smile.

It’s no wonder UNESCO recognized the Mediterranean lifestyle — not just for the food, but for the way it brings people together.

Science and Art in the Same Bottle

Making good Lozovača is not easy.

Too much heat — you lose aroma.

Too little — alcohol doesn’t distill properly.

Too much “head” — it’s unsafe.

Too little — it loses its strength.

That’s why Lozovača is an art of balance.

At OPG Branko Marinov, we follow traditional recipes with modern quality control.

The result is a brandy that smells of stone, sun, and vine — smooth, clean, and authentic.

Lozovača is the purest form of rakija — no additives, no color, no filters.

Just honesty in liquid form.

Why Lozovača from OPG Branko Marinov Is Unique

There are spirits made in factories — and those born from land, sun, and hands that remember every vine.

Our vineyards in Jasenovik and Dolac, in the heart of Primošten, produce grapes of low yield but exceptional quality.

No irrigation. No chemicals. No shortcuts.

From such grapes comes a brandy that tells a story —

A story of family, stone, sweat, and pride.

This isn’t just a drink.

It’s cultural heritage in a bottle.

Each bottle of Lozovača from OPG Branko Marinov carries a name, a location, and a story — a reminder that what we drink can also reflect who we are.

How to Recognize Good Lozovača

Color: Crystal clear, no haze.

Aroma: Gentle, fruity, without harshness.

Taste: Warm but smooth — spreads softly, leaving freshness.

Finish: Dry and clean.

If the brandy “burns” — it’s not good.

Good Lozovača warms, not burns.

A Toast to Time

Lozovača is not just a drink — it’s a symbol of time that doesn’t rush.

A reminder of when things were done with purpose, when home-distilled brandy was part of everyday life, and when scents and people lasted longer than seasons.

When you raise your glass, you may not think about fermentation or distillation —

but you’ll think of the moment — of what connects you to others.

That’s the magic of Lozovača.

So next time you want to taste something real — something that reminds you of roots, nature, and family —
